Jung a Model Citizen at 18

The Kelowna Rockets, like any junior hockey club, draft the most skilled player they can find at any particular position. But when that player is not only talented on the ice, but a model citizen off it, the team looks brilliant and the player doesn't look half bad either.
The Rockets knew they were getting a talented goaltender in Torrie Jung when they listed him in the summer of 2006, but his exploits this summer off the ice are one to admire. Jung has been working at a day camp for special-needs kids. He takes them swimming, bowling, skating and simply spending time with them. Remember folks, Jung is just 18, and many of his teammates, or those in his age group, are likely playing video games, working out, skiing at a nearby lake or relaxing in the summer sun. Sure, Jung has had a little r and r along the way, but it just shows you what type of quality individual he really is.
Call me old fashioned, but I always like to see junior players doing some type of work over the summer. Sitting around and farting away the summer seems like such a waste, and seeing a player learn something new outside of the game of hockey, can only benefit them as an individual. Jung spent his summer mowing lawns from 7 am until 5 pm, followed by a trip to the gym five days a week where he has put on some muscle to his 6'1 frame. Jung was in Kelowna earlier this summer for a goaltending camp, which saw protected players on the ice - twice a day for five days - with Rockets goaltending coach Kim Dillibaugh.
It sounds like a busy, yet rewarding summer for Jung, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the June NHL draft.
If Jung turns into the pro prospect that many people believe, the team that drafted him will also have a model citizen, who will contribute as much off the ice as he does on it!

Excellent to see a young man with character developing into one who may very well be at the top of his game in life on and off the ice.

Hey Russell. I knew T.J was a quality person when I met him. But after hearing what he was doing this summer, I even think more highly of him. It's these type of young men that you want to cheer for, you want to see succeed. I'm just glad he's part of the Rockets organization!
