Unfortunatley Rockets Find Familiar Place in Standings

  • The Kelowna Rockets find themselves in a familiar place, last place in the BC division after back-to-back home losses. The Rockets fell 4-3 to Spokane Saturday night, yet the loss felt worse than just a one goal setback. The Rockets looked tentative physically, appearing scared to take a bad penalty.
  • The Rockets were out-shot badly in the 3rd period (13-3), a clear indication that the Rockets are still a fragile club when tied or playing with a slim lead. The Rockets were up 3-2 in the third, but a Jared Spurgeon goal to tie the game was the momentum shift the Chiefs needed, as they took control of the game from that point before getting the game winner with under five minutes left to go in regulation time.
  • Brandon McMillan scored the Rockets goal of the year with a tremendous shorthanded effort in the second period. McMillan showed tremendous speed by skating to the outside before blowing away from the Spokane defenseman for a one-on-one situation with Chiefs goaltender Dustin Tokarski. McMillan quickly went to the backhand, showing once again why McMillan will be a key player for his team as a 18-19 and 20 year old.
  • Torrie Jung will definitely want to have the game winning goal back. Spokane forward Seth Compton's goal came after a sharp angle shot that appeared to hit Jung's blocker before squeezing past him on the short side. With the Rockets playing with little confidence with the game tied at 3, a goal like that only makes matters worse.
  • Rockets head coach Ryan Huska didn't hold back on the AM 1150 post game show when asked about his teams penalty killing unit. Huska called the shorthanded unit 'brutal', as his club gave up a power play goal for the 10th time in the clubs first 11 games.
  • Give props to Rockets rookie defenseman Collin Bowman for getting into a scrap with Spokane's Cody Esposito. Bowman was the smaller of the two combatants, yet stood in there despite taking a couple of solid shots to the head. In the end Bowman staggered Esposito in a spirited bout between the two. We called it a draw.
  • The Rockets have now lost 4 of their first 6 games on home ice by just a single goal. If your a Rockets fan, you just hope those close calls which results in no points at the end of the night doesn't come back and bite the team later on this season.
  • Veteran Myles MacRae was a healthy scratch for a second straight game. It will be interesting how MacRae responds when the Rockets host Vancouver Wednesday night. Or will he sit for a third straight game? It's clear the coaching staff are sending a message to the 19 year old forward.
  • Collin Bowman's mom and dad from Littleton Colorado were at Saturday's game, plus Tysen Dowzak's mom and dad from Fergus Falls Minnesota took in both games on the weekend. We had a chance to meet Dowzak's dad after Saturday game. Dowzak's dad is a monster of a man, and is a clear reason why the Rockets defenseman is 6'5 and over 220 pounds.

I'm not sure what you think of the situation Regan but IMO Huska needs to decide who is going to be the starting goaltender, and play him. If you keep going from one goalie to the next, there is NO way either of them can get a groove going. I thought Kristofer ended on a real high on Friday night, and Huska turns around and destroy's that high by throwing Jung in net. Ok, i realise we have a great 1-2 punch in net, but for crying out loud, how can a goalie get on a good groove if he is playing every second game? This whole situation is starting to eerily look like the Dustin Slade Situation last year...

The goaltending situation has me scratching my head too. I know they want to keep both guys sharp, but having them not play more than 3 straight games must mess then up a bit. Since the Rockets have hit the 10 game mark, I anticipate them playing the hot goaltender, and if he rattles off 10 good starts, so be it.
