McColgan's record breaking performance accompanied by loss

  • The second period hasn't been kind to the Kelowna Rockets lately. Sunday night in Vancouver, the middle frame was to blame in a 6-3 setback at Pacific Coliseum. Despite building up a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, the Vancouver Giants erupted with five-second period goals in the lopsided win. The Rockets were out-scored 5-0 in the second period and were out-shot 19-1.
  • In the last three games the Rockets have been out-scored 8-0 in the second period and have been out-shot 55-11.
  • Shane McColgan scored twice in a losing cause, giving the rookie forward 42 points on the season. Those 42 points sets a new Kelowna Rockets franchise record of points in a season by a 16 year-old. Marty Flichel held the old mark of 41 points as a 16 year-old set back in the 1992-93 season.
  • Mark Guggenberger started the game in goal but was yanked after giving up 5 goals on 22 shots. Adam Brown was solid in a relief appearance, including a nice glove hand save off of Giants forward Craig Cunningham in the second period.
  • The Rockets again played the game without 9 regulars. Lucas Bloodoff could return to the lineup next Friday against Kamloops while Brandon McMillan may be forced into action Wednesday against the Everett Silvertips. McMillan battles for gold with Team Canada Tuesday night at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
  • It looked like 15 year-old rookie forward Tyrell Goulbourne had scored his first WHL goal when a puck got past Giants goaltender Mark Segal in the third period. But after video review it was ruled that the puck went off 20 year-old Tyler Halliday before entering the back of the net. Goulbourne will have to settle with an assist.
  • The Rockets were playing their 5th game in 8 nights and it showed. Being short staffed and playing 13 rookies made for an uphill climb heading into Sunday's game.
  • The Pacific Coliseum ice crew will be busy over the next few weeks as they get the building ready for the upcoming Winter Olympics. One of the major changes to the building will be the elimination of close to seven rows of seats along the boards to make it 'Olympic size' for the games. Figure skating and short track speeding skating will take place in the venue.

Has Chad Ketting been traded or sent to some other junior team (as the WHL site has him as no longer on the team)?
