Hey, that's Rory McDade/McMillan doesn't go unnoticed

  • I was surprised to see Rory McDade perched high above the ice surface watching this mornings workout. The former Rocket has been doing some scouting work for director of player personnel Lorne Frey. McDade is not employed by the team but wanted to get a better idea of what the scouting role was all about. The Rockets have allowed him to get his feet wet.
  • Tyson Barrie looks like a man amongst boys at training camp. The slick skating defenseman is handling the puck with ease and is often seen going the length of the ice in an attempt at creating a good scoring chance.
  • Brandon McMillan is taking part in main camp this week. The 20 year-old isn't expected back, especially after signing a deal with Anaheim this summer. McMillan's presence on the ice can only bring up the level of training camp, which can have a positive trickle down effect for other players attempting to earn a spot.
  • The hardest working Rocket at camp this week has to be athletic therapist Jeff Thorburn. He is constantly moving from dressing room to dressing room getting the players prepared to take the ice. Thorburn is keeping upbeat, but the move to the Capital News Centre for training camp has effected him the most.
  • I don't have any data, but Tyson Barrie and Evan Bloodoff took home top honours when it came to conditioning. I understand Mitchell Callahan and Codey Ito were the leaders when it came to strength when preforming the bench press. Thorburn was also impressed with Tyler Matheson's transformation.
  • The ice is going in. I understand Prospera Place should be 'ice ready' later today. It should be considering the Rockets host the Giants Saturday night to open the home portion of their exibition schedule.
  • God bless Drew Wilson. The play-by-play voice of the Prince Albert Raiders will be calling tonight's exhibition game against Saskatoon. That is no easy task. Both teams will likely have a handful of veterans in the lineup and the game will have no flow. I have never called a pre-season game, nor will I ever if I have it my way.
